After last week’s china hutch post, we’re back to share more about our home office makeover! Our last house had a room that was designated as an office per the existing layout, but that room didn’t really make sense for us as a family to use as an office. We had a little one on the way, so sight lines were everything. Instead of burying ourselves in a back room, we decided to open up a wall (more on that soon!) to make the old office into a playroom, and instead of having a formal living room, we turned it into an office.
There’s no reason you have to use every room in a home as their designated spaces – we love switching it up to make the square footage work the very best for our lifestyle! After having a formal living room that NEVER got used our first home, we were excited about turning this one into an office space. It had direct sight lines into the family room, the playroom, and the entrance/dining room which was perfect for us.

We decided to paint the walls a dark moody color, Benjamin Moore’s Knoxville Gray, and we LOVED it! It’s a deep green color that can easily read masculine or neutral depending on how you accessorize it.
The floors were done along with the rest of the first floor, and we picked up this rug during a sale for $36 for a 6’x9′!
The rest of the room was shopping the house, our new/old china hutch, and a new fun chair. Here’s how she ended up the day we sold the house!
The old baseball photos are of M’s grandpa, who played for Michigan State University, and then the Red Sox, and I love how the old photos look against the matted mirrored frames and dark moody walls.
If we were to have stayed in this house, I had big dreams of a whole wall of built-ins and cabinets for tons of storage behind that desk, but I love how it turned out for a little paint and accessorizing! There was no overhead lighting in this room, so we used soft lighting through a table and floor lamp (both old projects we fixed up on a major budget!) which I actually prefer most of the time 🙂
Our favorite part about this room was definitely the paint color, and we’re plotting ways to introduce it into our new home as well!
