One Room Challenge – Week 4 – Vanity & Tile

Welcome to week 4 of the One Room Challenge! The week that you really start to stare at all of the work left to do all around you and contemplate how bad would it REALLY would be if things on that list got moved to the “phase 2” list, and if you should start taking Photoshop classes… I kid! Kind of 🙂

If you’ve been following along, make sure to stop by and say hi to Linda at Calling it Home and check out the rest of the designers and bloggers spaces and their amazing transformations!

If you’re here for the first time, feel free to catch up on weeks 1, 2 & 3! So far we’ve covered the lovely before’s and our plans, our demo and rebuild, and our floor decision.

Today we’re talking vanity wall! We actually intended on building something fabulous, but because time is being stretched a bit thin lately between wrapping up wedding plans and work, we challenged ourselves to make an inexpensive builder-basic cabinet (found at Home Depot for less than $100 on sale!) into something One Room Challenge appropriate.

And, without further ado, here she is!

Hold the cat-calls, it will go straight to her head.

Because we were unable to remove the wall to the left of the sink nook completely, and the sink drain actually comes out of that wall, we needed something that was exactly 60 inches. Obviously the cabinet as-is is not very exciting, so we started testing out different finishes. After a few misses, we settled on staining the entire thing with a dark walnut stain, and trying out a new-to-us technique, liming wax!

It completely transforms the stained look, and after a bit of buffing, it blended in giving it the aged look we were going for. For such a standard cabinet, I’m pretty excited about how it’s turning out! Now for the finishing touches… more liming wax? Add trim? That might be a last minute decision once everything comes together!

We also decided on a simple wood slab countertop (and will be sealing it multiple times for good measure) and found this fun sink for a steal at Lowes.

Next up is our tile wall – we decided on a simple subway and picked a medium gray grout to make the white pop. Of course mid-project we discovered one of our walls was not quite straight, which made our tiling-lives a bit difficult, but we’re playing around with options to make it not as obvious!

I love love love the sconces paired with the industrial tile, and can’t wait to get the mirror hung up!

Speaking of mirror, here’s where we’re currently at in the project.

I am obsessed with how this is coming together! The liming wax was the perfect touch on the stained vanity. We are dealing with crazy crooked walls in our bathroom right now too, nothing that a little strip of trim can’t he though!

Oh no! Best of luck to you! I think you’re right – a little strip of trim might be perfect!

I love how the stain on the vanity turned out, when I saw the photo I thought it was a vintage piece. Great job!
