And just like that it’s week 2!
Week 2 of what? We’re participating in the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda at Calling it Home! For the challenge, 20 designers and an unlimited amount of bloggers sign up to makeover a room and post the progress over 6 weeks! Side note, you should definitely head over to her blog after this post to check out all of the amazing makeovers! It’s basically my favorite 🙂
If you’re here for the first time, we shared the before pictures and master plans in week 1, and today we’re happy to report that the demo and drywall is well on it’s way!
We took down down both soffits from the sink and shower area, and holy moly did that make a world of difference! The door opening was widened as much as possible, with the left side becoming flush with the wall. As we expected, there was a huge vent stack hidden in the wall to the right. We decided to work with it and built the wall back as far as we could instead of moving it. While opening the whole space up would have been ideal, it was out of our budget (bathroom wall or wedding, bathroom wall or wedding 🙂 ) and the extra few inches we were able to get out of the wall made SUCH a huge difference! I’m so happy with our decision to work around it, as it creates a little privacy for the shower and toilet area, without completely closing it off as it previously was. In terms of materials, we used standard drywall in the sink nook, and mold-resistant green board in the shower area, just to be safe.
Isn’t it crazy how much of the ceiling was wasted on those soffits?
While the walls were down, we took care of the electrical before hanging the drywall – moving a few light switches, adding a plug so there’s one on each side of the vanity, and creating the light boxes for our two sconces!
We also decided what to do in order to close in the funny nook turned master bath, and after debating between barn doors and french doors, I finally convinced M that we needed the french option. Wee Wee!
I think both would have worked perfectly, but we’re loving how the french doors add some extra natural light to the windowless space!
Our original opening was about 61″, but because two 30″ doors would have intruded on the room too much for my taste, we found an amazing 48″ double door set at Home Depot and decided to frame in the opening to make it work.
We’ve gotten a headstart on most of the drywall, and can’t wait to finish it up this week! It’s our first shot at mudding an uneven ceiling, and I have to admit, we have a professional scheduled just incase 🙂
Next week we’ll share the latest progress, and I’m hoping to have gotten some shopping from our original mood board done!
Oh and PS – Be careful when using the flashlight function on your phone to look into walls. You may just happen to drop it and have to cut out mouse holes to get it out 🙂
But then again, you’re probably not nearly as clumsy as we are 🙂
