One Room Challenge Week 3: Progress & Organization

Excuse me while I air guitar to Livin’ on a Prayer. Because we’re halfway there 🙂

Have you seen all of the amazing ORC projects on Calling it Home so far? We are blown away as per usual! The fact that we’re already at week 3 of the challenge is both exciting and nerve wracking all at the same time!

Garage Makeover - ORC Week 3 - Sypsie Designs

It’s officially crunch time but we’re excited to share we made some progress on the garage and have successfully moved about half of everything that was previously on the floor, up up and away. It’s an amazing feeling actually being able to walk around in your garage I tell ya. Here’s some proof that I’m not lying! And I promise only minimal cropping was used 🙂

Let’s start with the organization part. As we shared last week, we did some shopping and picked up a hanging organization system for all of our rakes/shovels/brooms/misc clutter.

Garage ORC Week 2 - Sypsie.com

After looking at all of our options, we decided on the Gladiator GearTrack from Lowes. It was the most simple thing to hang up- all we needed was a level and to find the studs. 20 minutes later, we were already looking more organized!

I also brought up another shelving unit from the basement, and picked up a few bins (I heart you Costco) to keep everything neat and tidy. It’s a little different than styling fun shelves inside, but here’s what we have so far!

My heart palpitations have already majorly subsided after completing these two simple projects. Why didn’t we do this earlier? Oh yea, because that’s the million dollar question 🙂

Last but not least, we made some progress on the “mud room” plan. Our inspiration came from this pin, so we picked up some wood and adjusted it to fit our space. M and I got all of the trim up this week, including these super simple corbels.

The corbels were made from a scrap 2×10. All we did was print and cut out the shape we wanted, trace it onto the wood, and cut it out using a combination of our miter and jig saws. If you want to do something similar at home, my tip would be to make sure to pre-drill the holes before hanging. I promise it makes everything (including your relationship) much easier!

Next up is caulk, paint and hanging the hooks! Oh yea, and everything else on this list 🙂

  • Declutter aka take everything out and re-evalutate
  • Paint walls, ceiling (repairs from a previous water leak) and doors
  • Clean & paint floors
  • Add trim around exterior door
  • Finish installing garage door opener (currently just hanging there since we originally put it up last year. oops)
  • Add shelving along right wall
  • Add hanging storage/hooks along right wall
  • Create scrap wood storage
  • Add a peg board organizing system
  • Revamp work bench as mystery project
  • Create mudroom area
  • Build bench
  • Build gardening and potting area
  • Add art and fun signage
  • Be able to park my truck inside before Pure Michigan’s winter strikes… maybe : )

Back to work- wish us luck!

Great work! I wish I’d gone with a beefier hanging rack, our is difficult to keep on track. Mud room idea looks like it’s coming along great! Good work

Thanks Amy! I can’t believe we’re already halfway there! The hanging rack has only been up for a couple of days, but based on the ease of installation and quality, I’d definitely recommend it : )

Oh how I love the board and batten in the garage/mudroom! It is beautiful:) I have garage envy as my garage is so cluttered I get injured every time I attempt to walk through. Keep up the good work. Your organization is giving me inspiration!

Oh I am so jealous! I want to organize our garage SO bad but my husband won’t let me touch it- LOL. (I suppose that’s fair since he gives me creative license over the rest of the house). I bet it feels so good to get this project done- and I LOVE the mudroom wall. YUM! Can’t wait to see the final- good luck!
