Let’s take a little trip to the family room, shall we? Ever since our fireplace renovation, the sound of crickets have been coming from the space. Until now : )
We received this wood coffee table as a hand-me-down from my parents when we first moved in and it has sat untouched since. It’s insanely heavy and well built, not to mention I love the round shape of it, but the dated wood tone was not our favorite.
After wandering through Home Depot last week (there’s one 1/4 mile from our house- it’s a problem and the best thing at the same time) I spotted their chalk paint line, Ameriana. I picked up a pot of the white Everlasting color, as well as the clear creme wax topcoat to try on the table.
The process was just like most other chalk paints. No sanding or priming, just a good clean and you’re ready to paint!
I used both a paint brush and small foam roller to apply the paint, and everything was covered after about 3-4 coats. The consistency was really thick, but I think the application was thinner because I used a roller. With just a brush, I probably could have gotten away with only 2 coats. However, it dried really quickly, so the process was completed one night after work!
Now for the strangest part- the paint actually created a crackle effect on the table! I have never had that happen with chalk paint before, but I really love the finish now. Very unintentional, and not sure if it could be repeated, but it definitely adds to the worn look I was going for! Has chalk paint ever done that to you?
The next day I distressed the table in a few spots using a sanding block and tried the clear creme wax. It is officially my new favorite top coat! It’s a lot thinner than other waxes I’ve tried, and went on so incredibly easily. I usually dread waxing because of the time and effort it takes, but this one was simple and my arm wasn’t even close to tired by the end : ) It’s only been a few days, but so far the finish has held up great!
I absolutely love how it turned out, and am kicking myself for not doing it earlier. We also whipped up a wood tray for the top, so be sure to follow along to see that post later this week : )

The top coat of paint will crackle like that if the underneath layers are wet or moist. Even though a layer of paint feels dry, it is never really dry for several hours or even days, chalk paint included. Glad you like how it turned out. It’s very pretty
