This is one of our favorite projects to date because we got to start with such an amazing piece to begin with, and the finished product is so versatile!
As one of our garage sale finds, we picked up this vintage ironing board for $10. It was in great shape and could still fold down, but had a slight crack in the top of the board.
Maybe I’m nuts, but I was in love! I started off by sanding the top and sides of the board and filling in the cracks with wood filler.
Next, I primed the top and sides of the board and let that dry. In terms of colors and paints, we knew we wanted to paint the top of the board in chalkboard paint, and the sides a shade of aqua for a pop of color. So, we taped off the sides and took it outside for a few coats of spray chalkboard paint.
After that was dry, I taped off the top and bottom of the board and added our aqua color, Behr’s Wipeout.
I cleaned up the legs of the board by wiping all areas with an espresso colored stain on a rag, and followed up with some poly. After everything was dry, we were done!
I love love love how many ways this piece can be used!
How cute would this be as an entryway console table that also acts as a message board?
Or as an extra serving space when you’re entertaining that could be easily tucked away when not in use? Or even a breakfast and coffee bar for the mornings that seem to be the new kitchen update for the year? We had a little fun “staging” different scenarios below just for the heck of it.
We’re so excited about how this unique piece turned out! Which way is your favorite?

OMG this is awesome! I love the beverage station idea. I actually have 2 antique ironing boards and they are just leaning against the wall for decoration, I never thought to actually make them functional. And I’m totally obsessed with anything chalkboard right now!
Thanks so much Courtney! It was such a fun project to work on : ) I’m glad someone else loves vintage ironing boards- I thought I was crazy for getting so excited about finding one haha!

I LOVE this idea! I have my mom’s ironing board somewhere in our storage room and I just could not think of what to do with it but now I think I will do it up for entertaining! It’s nice and narrow and can be put up anywhere and stored when not in use! THANKS for the inspiration!
Thanks so much Joan! So glad you’re inspired 🙂 Hope it turns out fabulous!
I just picked up an ironing board at auction – I planned on making a folding table but I hadn’t thought of the chalkboard paint – this is going to make it so versatile, folded up and hanging or leaning a wall still a useable chalkboard, standing a great sideboard or sofa table – absolutely love it. I think I’m also thought that maybe add an extra wood rest underneath so that I can adjust the height… Oh the wheels are spinning now! Thanks for the great idea.
